New Jersey lawmakers are advancing bills to boost transparency in policing, including a ban on officers wearing masks amid growing concerns about immigration enforcement operations.

State Sen. Benjie Wimberly (D-Passaic) introduced a bill, S-4868 , earlier this month, which would prohibit any federal, state, county or municipal law enforcement officer from covering their face during official duties.

Violators could face a disorderly persons offense, punishable by fines of $500 to $1,000 and up to six months in jail.

The proposed bill provides limited exceptions for undercover work, medical needs, protective shields or smoke exposure during emergencies.

Wimberly says the new rule would provide “security” for citizens of the state.
