SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - The holidays are a time for gift-giving, but you may want to make sure you are focused on safety when it comes to the batteries in electronic devices you buy.

Do you own a smartphone, laptop, tablet, wireless headphones, gaming controllers, electric scooter, or cordless power tools? If you own or give any of these during the holidays, you may also give a lithium-ion battery. It’s a rechargeable battery intended to help keep your devices going, but it can also be a hazard.

You might be surprised how many items you own that use these kinds of batteries. If these batteries aren’t properly taken care of, they can cause fires.

Sioux City Fire Rescue Lieutenant John Nelson says you can spot an item with this battery, as they should be labeled “L-I-ion” on the device.
