Will Thilly, a Cranford resident known for turning public comment into prop-filled performances, is suing town officials and the governing body over what he calls free speech violations.

Thilly moonwalked and robot danced at government meetings this fall, including one appearance that went viral .

However, he says the council censored him on Nov. 10 with a “staged” walkout after he showed up holding a sizable beach ball.

He planned to protest the possible closing of a town pool , according to the suit, filed Monday in Superior Court of Union County.

“[Thilly’s] speech would have been peaceful, lawful, protected First Amendment expression, and would not have disrupted the meeting - had he been afforded the opportunity to continue,” the suit says.
