NATCHTOCHES, La. (KALB) - A Louisiana mother is working to raise $3.8 million by December 1 to secure experimental treatment for her daughter diagnosed with Sanfilippo Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that causes progressive brain damage.
Morgan Rachal said her daughter, Lydia, will lose the ability to walk, run, jump and dance as the disease progresses. Sanfilippo Syndrome has no current cure and typically limits life expectancy to the teenage years.
“I thought she was perfectly fine, and then a terminal disease that is like a childhood Alzheimer’s...so she’ll lose all of her abilities. She’ll experience seizures, will suffer and will die. Life expectancy is not past teenage years,” Rachal said.
Lydia was initially placed on a waiting list for a clinical trial that later shut down du
