The Friends of the Bourne Council on Aging’s Food Pantry began with little more than a small room, a few volunteers and 50 hungry people to feed. Today, it is the biggest resource for families in need in Bourne and surrounding communities, a group of kindhearted people eager to help whoever, whenever—serving more than a thousand residents and growing more each day.
Thirty-three years ago, there was no food pantry at all in the Town of Bourne. The vacancy sparked an idea in resident Peter Lindberg, who approached Sandra Vickery, director of the Council of Aging at the time, with the pivotal question: “Why don’t we have a food pantry?”
Vickery brought the idea to members of the Select Board, who held a meeting about the matter. The town then offered space in the downstairs area of the town
