GREENSBORO, N.C. — For more than 25 years, Janice Brevard has called her house home, and she says she “wouldn’t take nothing for it.”

As with many aging homes, the creaks and cracks have grown over time, which is why she maintains a home warranty that covers yearly HVAC inspections.

During a recent inspection, Brevard says a technician told her that her heat exchanger was failing.

“He explained to me that I needed to give him $2,604 for the heat exchanger to be replaced,” she said.

With cold weather approaching, panic set in. “Really, in all honesty, I panicked,” Brevard said.

However, something about the situation bothered her. A friend encouraged her to reach out for help.
