PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A trip to the Arizona State Fair turned into a frightening medical emergency for 16-year-old Shainey Hendershott, who says she was hospitalized for nearly four days after developing a severe infection.
Hendershott and her boyfriend visited the fair on Oct. 26. Days later, she was admitted to the hospital, and she believes it began after petting a pig at the fair’s petting zoo.
Physicians diagnosed her with an infection producing Shiga toxin , a type of toxin commonly associated with certain strains of E. coli that can be found in animals.
“I just knew that it was something pretty dire, and we needed to get this taken care of and looked at,” said her mom, Sommer Lee.
On Nov. 13, the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) issued a health advisory reporting
