ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown announced on Wednesday that he was joining 21 other attorneys general in a lawsuit to stop the federal government from cutting off SNAP benefits.

Brown says the coalition wants to block new guidance from USDA indicating that some legal immigrants are ineligible for food assistance, including permanent residents who have been granted asylum or have been admitted as refugees.

The guidance was issued in the wake of the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which narrowed eligibility for certain non-citizen groups.

According to Brown, the attorneys general say the guidance contradicts federal law and could impose put financial penalties on states.

They want the court to declare the guidance unlawful.
