Windsor Spitfires’ goalie Joey Costanzo rose to the occasion.
Owen Sound Attack goalie Carter George will probably backstop Canada’s world junior team next month. As an overage player, Costanzo is ineligible to play for the world junior team, but it doesn’t mean he doesn’t like a challenge.
“He’s not shooting the puck on me, but obviously he’s a great goalie,” Costanzo said of George. “I like to think I like to rise to the occasion.
“It’s my job to be better than the other goalie. I’m a fifth-year guy now and I think the guys rely on me a bit now.”
George stopped 23-of-25 shots on Thursday, but Costanzo was one better by turning aside 25-of-26 shots to lead the Spitfires to a 3-1 win over the Midwest Division-leading Attack on Wednesday at the WFCU Centre.
