LONDON — The death toll from a devastating fire at a residential apartment complex in Hong Kong has reached 55, as search and rescue operations continue. Fire department officials reported that 51 victims died at the scene, while four others succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. Currently, 76 individuals are receiving treatment, with 15 in critical condition and 28 in serious condition.
The fire affected seven of the eight buildings in the complex located in the Tai Po district. Officials stated that fires are still burning in three of these buildings, although all other blazes are now under control.
In connection with the fire, Hong Kong police have arrested three men linked to the construction firm responsible for the renovation of the housing complex. Authorities suspect that the mesh used during the renovation did not meet safety standards. Additionally, they believe that a significant amount of Styrofoam installed in the windows and outer walls acted as an accelerant once the fire ignited. Notably, the mesh and Styrofoam were found in the one building that remained unaffected by the fire.
A massive response was mounted to combat the blaze, with over 140 fire engines and more than 800 firefighters and paramedics deployed on Wednesday. Drones were also utilized in the efforts.
As of Thursday, approximately 279 people have been reported missing, according to Hong Kong leader John Lee. He expressed his sorrow over the tragedy, stating, "The fire has resulted in many casualties, including a fireman who died in the line of duty." Lee extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and injured.
Chinese President Xi Jinping also conveyed his sympathies to the victims' families. He ordered local authorities to ensure that search and rescue operations continue, that medical treatment is provided for the injured, and that post-disaster relief efforts are implemented to minimize casualties and losses.
