Construction will begin soon on a $31 million mixed-income development that will bring 80 new apartments to the Covington area, boosting the supply of affordable housing that some parish officials have said is scarce on the northshore.

Site work has been underway for some time on Falconer Drive for the Capstone at Covington Place, the complex being developed by the Banyan Foundation, a Birminham, Alabama., group that has developed affordable and mixed-income sites across the southeast, including Baton Rouge and Lake Charles.

While apartment complex proposals in St. Tammany Parish are often met with intense resistance from residents who say the pace of development already impacts their quality of life and property values, the Capstone has not generated much in the way of opposition. That'
