It’s now up to Maui Mayor Richard Bissen to fill County Council member Tasha Kama’s seat after the remaining eight Council members failed to select Kama’s successor from the three nominees.

The county charter provides no option to hold a special election to choose a successor after Kama died Oct. 26 at the age of 73. The charter also gives Bissen no deadline to make his choice.

The Council on Tuesday failed to meet its Nov. 25 deadline to pick a successor to serve the remainder of Kama’s 2025-2027 term representing Kahului.

Neither Virgilio “Leo” Agcolicol, Kelson Kauanoe Batangan, nor Carol Lee Kamekona received a majority of Council votes, while some members expressed unease that it was not an option to hold a special election that would allow voters to decide.
