Affordable housing for seniors and families is being threatened in Pearl City and elsewhere. My rent will increase by $800 in January. My neighbor, who is 80 years old, paid $2,000 for rent this month. These “low-income” senior apartments are just 432 square feet, including utilities.

Rents in so-called affordable housing are rising by hundreds of dollars, forcing vulnerable residents out, possibly onto the street. Seniors on fixed incomes and families simply cannot keep up, and cannot afford the high costs of moving.

With so many vacant units, why are we facing such high rent and so little protection? Elected leaders and housing agencies need to take action before more neighbors are left homeless or forced to move away. We urge government officials and the public to address these growin
