ALBANY, Ga. - Thanksgiving may bring family, food, and celebration but safety experts say it also brings the highest risk of cooking fires all year.

According to national safety data, Thanksgiving Day sees an average of 1,400 cooking fires, making it the peak day for these incidents.

And on top of that, Georgia leads the nation in cooking fires .

One major culprit: improperly deep-frying frozen or partially frozen turkeys.

Most big U.S. retailers are closed on Thanksgiving Day. However, many will open early the following day, Black Friday, the unofficial start of the holiday gift-buying season.
