Merseyside’s outgoing Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) has a right to be disappointed according to the man who could effectively take her job. Earlier this month, the government confirmed it would look to scrap PCCs across England and Wales from 2028.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said PCCs had been a "failed experiment" and police would instead be accountable to their local mayors or councils. Whitehall officials said the move could save around £100m.
