Two National Guard members shot Wednesday in what officials called an ambush near the White House remain in critical condition on Thanksgiving Day. The shooting was targeted and is being investigated as a possible act of terrorism, law enforcement sources said.

The suspect has been identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, four senior U.S. law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation told NBC News. He was an Afghan national from Bellingham, Washington, who served alongside U.S. troops in Afghanistan, according to officials and a relative.

Lakanwal was detained shortly after the shooting, and authorities believe he was the only gunman.
