A few years ago, I received a handwritten card in the mail from Sally Thompson. Inside was a simple, heartfelt thank-you for advocating for sidewalks near her home.

Sally’s note wasn’t long. But it was genuine — the kind of gratitude that comes from someone who had waited a very long time to see something meaningful happen in their neighborhood. The Safe Routes to School improvements — the ones that brought new sidewalks on the north side of Eastern Avenue near Eastern Elementary and Central High School — had just been completed when Sally sent her note.
