A hero firefighter was disciplined for not telling off his colleagues for using the term 'fireman' and lost an appeal against the decision in an unfair dismissal case. Simon Bailey, previously commended for bravery, was given a written warning in June 2023 by a tribunal for failing to challenge staff saying 'fireman'.
The warning came after a woman colleague, former England rugby player Sasha Acheson, filed a complaint about his behaviour and " sexism " in the service. Part of her complaint mentioned that 'fireman' was being "used frequently" in the station, despite the word being "outdated".
