The new Hillsborough Law matters to Manchester just as much as it does to Merseyside, the Deputy Prime Minister has said. Referring to the Manchester Arena attack in 2017, David Lammy said that bereaved families felt they had to 'drag the truth out of the system'.

Mr Lammy, who is also the justice secretary, paid tribute to Andy Burnham for the way he has campaigned for the Hillsborough Law which he said will now be strengthened. Unveiling an amendment to the law, Mr Lammy said the 'duty of candour' will be extended.

This means that officials representing public bodies, such as the police, will have a legal obligation to come forward with all of the relevant information, to admit mistakes and to act to put things right. It comes eight years after the Arena attack claimed 2
