Someone is vandalizing railway crossing arms in Norfolk and Oxford counties, and police say they might get somebody killed.
OPP Const. Matthew Foster said safety barriers at three crossings were damaged between Nov. 4 and 25.
The culprit or culprits allegedly left the crossing arms at each intersection “inoperable,” Foster said in an email.
Crossing arms come down to stop traffic and block the roadway as a passing train approaches, preventing vehicles from getting stuck on the tracks.
Drivers also see flashing lights and hear a clanging bell to warn of an oncoming train.
“Tampering with or causing mischief to railway equipment could have tragic consequences,” Foster said.
