A McDonald’s restaurant that recently opened in Bridgeland is drawing both support and skepticism from community members wary that the restaurant could worsen traffic congestion and social disorder close to a busy northeast Calgary intersection.

The fast-food spot near Edmonton Trail and Memorial Drive N.E. is at a site community leaders say has long grappled with safety issues and traffic bottlenecks.

Despite early hesitation, the Bridgeland Business Improvement Area (BIA) said it supported the development application for the new McDonald’s.

Chris Hankins, board chair of the BIA, said he initially shared concerns raised by residents on social media about social disorder at the site previously occupied by Starbucks, and the risk of drive-thru traffic backing up onto Edmonton Trail.
