Carl Stoneback is spending his first holiday away from his Minnesota family.

The Navy E-1 just finished bootcamp at the Naval Submarine School. For Thanksgiving, he ended up at the U.S. Submarine Veterans Inc. Groton Base.

“Our command is telling us we should go out and do something for Thanksgiving,” Stoneback said. “A lot of them suggested this because it’s free grub and it’s supposed to be good. There’s a lot of Navy Vets to talk to and what not, so they told us to come here.”

That is exactly the point of the annual event put on by the Subvets. Dozens of volunteers take days preparing to serve hundreds of Thanksgiving meals with all the fixings.
