A historic theater in San Lorenzo is undergoing renovations and being brought back to life.

The beloved Lorenzo Theater in Alameda County held its groundbreaking for phase two of the project on Thursday.

The theater was originally built in 1947 to seat 700 people, but it closed in 1982 and has remained vacant since then. Two fires in 2020 also significantly damaged the venue.

Beginning September, work will be underway on interior reconstruction, mural restoration and the preservation of the theater's ticket booth, marquee and tower.

"We'd love to see it become a centerpiece for the community," Kelly McHan from Save the Lorenzo said.

The project is set to be completed by 2027.
