BUFFALO, N.Y. — The first thing that comes to mind for many people each Thanksgiving is the food. Turkey, gravy, potatoes, maybe stuffing.
But for 14,000 people, it means the Turkey Trot, which is the oldest consecutively run footrace in North America. It stepped off for the 130th time Thursday morning, starting on Delaware Avenue in North Buffalo and ending downtown on Franklin Street, near the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center.
The Turkey Trot started at 9 a.m. Thursday. It serves as the biggest Buffalo Niagara YMCA fundraiser of the year, with proceeds from the race supporting the YMCA’s mission to empower youth, ensure health equity, and provide critical services to those in need.
The money raised is used to fund all sorts of programming and all sorts of summer camps for kids.
