A person with a handgun fatally shot a dog that was attacking a woman in Newark on Thanksgiving morning, authorities said.
Police received a call about 9:10 a.m. that a dog had bitten a woman in the 200 block of S. 9th Street.
“An armed concerned citizen at the scene fired a handgun at the dog to stop the attack against the victim,” a police spokesperson said, adding that the dog was killed.
The victim was taken to University Hospital in Newark with injuries not considered life threatening.
The shooter remained at the scene and was not charged. The incident remains under investigation, police said.
