ALEXANDRIA — The need for bronze star grave markers for veterans has recently been met thanks to a generous donation from Douglas Machine, Inc.
The Alexandria manufacturing plant is not only donating the stars, but one of their programmers, Adam Baumann, redesigned the star and it is now being laser cut out of stainless steel. The symbols on the star are as follows: crossed rifles for land forces and an anchor for sailors. The letters signify fraternity, charity and loyalty. The marker was patterned after the Civil War Grand Army of the Republic Badge.
The company has donated about 100 of the veteran grave markers and is in the process of making more.
So why was there a need and how did Douglas Machine get involved? Jake Turner, director of Douglas County Veteran Services, Arvid Lo
