Surrey police are investigating an incident involving an unidentified woman who entered the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Surrey Memorial Hospital and held three infants. The event occurred on October 28 at approximately 6:55 a.m. and is being classified as an assault. According to police, the woman gained access to the NICU, removed her shirt, and made skin-to-skin contact with one baby before doing the same with two others. The infants are not related to her. Sgt. Tige Pollock stated that a hospital staff member noticed the woman and alerted security, who subsequently removed her from the premises. Police were notified later that afternoon. Skin-to-skin contact, which involves holding a naked baby against a bare chest, is typically recommended for new parents to help infants adjust after birth. It is particularly beneficial for babies in neonatal care, as it can enhance oxygen levels and lower stress. Details regarding how the woman accessed the NICU or whether she interacted with anyone after entering remain unclear. Pollock mentioned, "I’m not exactly sure what she did once she was in the unit. Obviously that’s all part of the investigation and the evidence that officers will put forward if she does get charged." Investigators have reached out to the families of the infants, interviewed hospital staff, and reviewed security footage but have yet to identify the woman. To aid in the investigation, police are releasing an image of the suspect. The woman is described as a white female, aged between 30 and 40, approximately 5 feet 2 inches tall, with a heavy build. At the time of the incident, she was wearing a black hoodie with "Essentials Department" printed on it, dirty grey sweatpants, cream-colored sandals, and black socks, and was carrying a camouflage-patterned jacket. Anyone with information about the woman is encouraged to contact Surrey police at 604-599-0502 and reference file number 25-94777 (SP).
