Syracuse, N.Y. -- As much as 8 inches of fresh snow could fall between 5 p.m. and midnight today in Syracuse and parts of Central New York, according to an afternoon update from the National Weather Service.

A lake effect snow warning remains in effect for Madison, Onondaga and Oneida counties until 7 a.m. Saturday.

Communities in those areas could snow accumulation between 6 and 15 inches, with as much as 20 inches dumping in some areas, according to the weather service.

Winds could gust as high was 35 mph, causing snow to blow and significantly reducing visibility Friday evening, the weather service warned.

“Snowfall rates up to 2.5 inches per hour are expected in the heaviest lake effect snow band this afternoon and evening,” the weather service said.
