EAST RUTHERFORD – “Yankee Doodle Dandle” never sounded better.
The signature song for the Washington Township High School football team has been played hundreds of times by the marching band during the best of times for the squad.
On Friday, they serenaded the Minutemen as they celebrated the program’s first state championship with the players jumping into the student section of the stadium.
Washington Township put the finishing touches on an undefeated season with a 31-12 victory over Passaic Tech in the state Group 5 final at MetLife Stadium.
“This group, we’ve won at every single level and this is just the cherry on top,” junior defensive lineman Gabe Palaganas said.
Senior Andrew Osborn added, “We’re finally here and we knew we had to take care of business. And that’s what we did.
