A new first-of-its-kind substance use "engagement" center in Macomb County aims to bring the gap between hospitals and jails for those grappling with addiction and is stepping up its outreach to help those in need.
Macomb County Community Mental Health's new Substance Use Engagement Center opened earlier this fall at 38300 Van Dyke Avenue in Sterling Heights and offers short-term assistance to people struggling with drug or alcohol addiction, everything from a shower to food. Opened late last month, the 24/7 short-term crisis intervention facility is meant to be an alternative to jail or an emergency department.
Nicole Gabriel, director of substance use at Macomb County Community Mental Health, said she doesn't think there are any other centers like this one in Macomb County.
