A large section of Highway 400 reopened in North York Friday night after it was closed following a two-vehicle crash involving a police cruiser.

The province’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit, invoked its mandate to investigate the crash because it involved an officer vehicle, said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.

The crash took place around 7 a.m. between an OPP cruiser and another vehicle in the Highway 400 and Finch Avenue area, the SIU said. However, the watchdog would not comment on whether the collision was the result of a police pursuit.

In an update Friday evening, the OPP said in a news release that the man driving the vehicle was sent to hospital with serious injuries that were not life-threatening.
