NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The annual debate between real and artificial Christmas trees has taken on new economic dimensions this year as tariffs on imports drive up costs for fake trees.

More than 80 percent of artificial Christmas trees sold in the United States are manufactured in China. Ongoing trade tensions have led to increased costs that retailers are passing on to consumers.

“Tariffs have impacted the price of artificial Christmas trees and some decor in the artificial tree. For artificial trees, prices have gone up about 10 to 15%,” said Jami Warner, Executive Director of the American Christmas Tree Association .

Warner said retailers and suppliers have absorbed as much cost as possible.
