A neglected alleyway has been transformed by the community.

The cut-through, located on Elk Street in North Ormesby, had become overgrown and filled with litter, making it unwelcoming and unsafe for residents.

Middlesbrough Council’s east neighbourhood team joined forces with the community to clear rubbish, cut back thick trees and bushes, and improve lighting.

Valerie Moody, a long-time resident whose family has lived nearby for more than 90 years, praised the changes.

Ms Moody said: "They’ve done an amazing job. It’s so much safer for local residents now."

The improvements have made the alleyway brighter during the day and safer at night.
