MONTEBELLO — It was a journey 90 years in the making. But it’s not quite finished for Montebello. The Oilers’ bid for a first-ever CIF-Southern Section championship in football fell short in a heartbreaking 24-23 defeat to Woodbridge on Friday night in the Division 13 title game.
Montebello (7-7) trailed 24-17 with time running out in the fourth quarter before running back Donovan Murillo scored on a 15-yard touchdown run with 1:09 remaining. The Oilers elected to kick the extra point to try to tie the game. The snap was low and kicker Fernando Cruz made the best of it. He booted a high and powerful kick that was narrowly wide.
Montebello’s onside kick attempt was recovered by Woodbridge (6-8), which got one first down to run out the clock and seal the championship.
