HERMLEIGH, Texas (KCBD) - The No. 1 Jayton Jaybirds extended their winning streak to 28 games with a 76-62 win over the previously unbeaten No. 3 Benjamin Mustangs.
“That’s a great football team over there. Those guys do play very well, they got some studs. Keegan Hayes is unreal, and I told my kids it doesn’t matter this time of year what it looks like, you just have to win by one,” said Jayton’s head coach Josh Stanaland. “We’ll take one-point wins the rest of the way, survive and advance, baby! We’ll be playing December football!”
Next week’s state semifinal will feature No. 1 vs. No. 2 as the Jaybirds take on the 13-0 Klondike Cougars, who overcame 12-0 Miami 60-36. In last year’s semi, Jayton pulled away for a 90-48 win.
