Anyone with a National Insurance number has been given a stark warning from the Department for Work and Pensions ( DWP ).
Fraudsters were said to be exploring countless methods to retrieve personal information to steal identities.
In the first six months of 2025 alone, there were 118,000 documented cases of identity theft across the UK, according to reports.

Crooks who successfully steal identities can then use that information to fraudulently secure loans, or submit insurance claims.
The DWP said people could help protect themselves from such scams by keeping three things off their CV.
