A couple are slashing more than £100k off their housing costs by constructing their own home - utilising polystyrene blocks rather than traditional bricks.
Hannah Bird and her spouse Charlie, a professional golfer, both aged 26, purchased the quarter-acre plot in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, back in June 2022 for £70k.
The pair opted to construct a property from the ground up instead of purchasing a newly-built home - with local prices beginning at £375k for a two-bedroom on a modern development.
To dodge the hefty £30k labour expenses, the duo tackled 80 per cent of the construction work personally and selected polystyrene blocks - known as ICF (insulated concrete framework) - which interlock and get filled with concrete.
