Neither Arkansas State nor Appalachian State have a chance to reach the College Football Playoff, but both teams are treating Saturday's regular-season finale at 1:30 p.m. Central like a makeshift playoff game.
Both holding 5-6 overall records, whichever team wins at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, N.C., will extend its season by becoming bowl-eligible.
"It's truly a one-game season," Arkansas State Coach Butch Jones said. "There is no reason to hold back. ... We're in a playoff game. It's going to take a monumental effort to go into a place like (Appalachian State) that's very difficult to play against a really good football team."
