The Detroit Police Department is facing criticism over a traffic stop that touched off the Oct. 21 police shooting of an allegedly armed teen after releasing video that showed police initially following the vehicle without explanation.
The McDonald’s drive-through incident that began with what Detroit police initially alleged was an obscured license plate was among three department shootings in six weeks that started with routine stops, prompting calls for limits on so-called “pretext” traffic stops that can be leveraged to look for more serious crimes.
