ON THIS DAY IN 1896 , the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “WASHINGTON, D.C. — This was one of the first cities to be struck with the bicycle craze. The conditions here are so favorable for this sport that it was quickly adopted by all classes. The broad, smooth asphalt streets and avenues, together with the fine roads leading to suburban towns, are daily covered with devotees of the wheel. A number of fashionable riding schools have been established in this city and are well patronized. Swell bicycle parties are gradually superseding the runs of the Chevy Chase Hunt club and carriage riding, which was once so fashionable in the social set at the capital, is becoming more and more a thing of the past.
