With the recent 30th anniversary of the last Quebec sovereignty referendum , we were reminded of Jacques Parizeau’s remarks blaming the Yes side’s narrow loss on money and ethnic votes.

Now, if the separatist Parti Québécois could somehow chip away at the non-francophone opposition to independence, might the Yes option finally win?

PQ Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon seems to think so and has occasionally tried the charm offensive, addressing the anglophone community directly. Last week, on The Gazette’s Corner Booth podcast , he ruefully asked why anglophones always vote the same way and don’t “make a choice based on their best interest?”
