A shark attack off the east coast of Australia has left one woman dead and a man seriously injured. The incident occurred at Crowdy Bay, approximately 40 miles south of Port Macquarie in New South Wales, early Thursday morning. Emergency services received reports of the attack around 6:30 a.m., according to local police.
A witness at the scene provided assistance to the victims before paramedics arrived. The woman, believed to be around 25 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 26-year-old man suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital, where he is currently in serious but stable condition.
Authorities indicated that the victims are thought to be visitors from Switzerland, although their identities have not been publicly disclosed. In response to the attack, the beach has been closed while police conduct an investigation. A report is also being prepared for the coroner to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
As the investigation continues, officials are urging caution in the area and reminding beachgoers to be aware of their surroundings when swimming in the ocean.
