GRAND RAPIDS, MI — The General Wood Shop, an LGBTQ bar in downtown Grand Rapids that prided itself on creating a space where everyone felt welcome, safe and celebrated, is closing.

“Together, we built more than a bar; we built a community we will always be proud of,” according to a social media post announcing the bar’s closure.

The cocktail bar, 507 Bridge St. NW, was opened in July 2023 by Alberto Garza and Jeff Steinpor. The General Wood Shop described itself as an “intimate and stylish cocktail bar” that was “curated with the queer community in mind.”

“This means sassy drink names, splashes of glitz and glam, and events for every flavor,” according to its website.
