SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Notre Dame travels to California to face Stanford in a rivalry that spans a century of college football history.
The programs first met on January 1, 1925, in the Rose Bowl, featuring legendary coaches Knute Rockne of Notre Dame and Glen “Pop” Warner of Stanford. Stanford’s Ernie Nevers played through an injury while Notre Dame’s Four Horsemen took the field together for their final game.
The Fighting Irish would go on to win that game 27-10 and be named national champions for the 1924 season.
After their 1925 matchup, the teams met only occasionally until they began playing more regularly starting in 1988. Since 1989, the winner has been awarded the Legends Trophy, featuring an Irish crystal bowl atop a California redwood base.
