They’re gone now. With tears in their eyes, Svitlana and Max (they asked me not to publish their last names for security reasons) and their two boys have left Moorhead. It’s a tragic shame.
They came here to escape the brutal war in Ukraine. When they arrived at Fargo’s Hector Airport two years ago, Svitlana was thrilled and said, “God bless America.”
“It was so exciting to arrive here,” Max told me. “I never believed I would be in a country with so much freedom.”
Svitlana and Max got good jobs, while the boys made lots of friends at their schools. The four of them didn’t receive any financial assistance from the U.S. However, the work permits for Max and Svitlana expired. The U.S. government refused to extend them. So, they had to leave.
