National gas prices have fallen below $3 per gallon, the lowest average in four years, according to a recent analysis.

On Nov. 28, GasBuddy, the gas price tracking app, announced gas prices fell to their lowest since May 2021. Averages were $2.99 at the pump as of Nov. 29, according to the app's online tracker.

That's good news for Americans driving during the holiday season.

“We haven’t seen the national average fall this low in over four years, and the speed and breadth of the decline are remarkable," Patrick De Haan, GasBuddy’s head of petroleum analysis, said in a statement. "Every single state has seen relief at the pump over the past week, a rare feat that underscores how challenging the fundamentals are for gasoline prices right now.”

Of course, prices differ vastly across the country – from around $2.36 in Oklahoma, to about $4.54 in California. But average prices have fallen in all 50 states in the last week, GasBuddy said. As of Nov. 28, 30 states had average prices below $3 per gallon, with more states expected to join the list, De Haan said on X.

AAA, the North American federation of motor clubs, calculated the national average at about $3.01 a gallon. However, in California, the average price per gallon as of Nov. 29 was $4.57, about the same price as a month ago, according to AAA. In Washington, the average price per gallon of $4.18 on Nov. 29, was down 14 cents from a month ago, according to AAA.

As USA TODAY previously reported, GasBuddy and AAA have slight differences in how they calculate average prices. Whereas GasBuddy gathers data from customers using its app or local gas station discounts, AAA draws from swipes by companies’ fleet credit cards at gas stations across the country.

GasBuddy’s analysis said price drops are being driven by a litany of factors. These include decreasing crude oil costs, aided by more supply from OPEC+, the group of oil-exporting countries, and record American oil production, as well as improvements to refinery outputs and easing seasonal fuel demand.

Before Thanksgiving, AAA said the country has seen little fluctuation in gas prices, partly due to lower crude oil prices and no major storms hitting Gulf Coast refineries. A record of at least 73 million were expected to travel by car for Thanksgiving, AAA said.
