To the editor,
I learned from my parents what it means to be an American. My father was an Army radio technician in World War II, fighting for human rights and democracy. When America opposed the Soviet Union for the dictatorial and brutal control of their population, I learned of the dangers of secret police, political prison camps and the censorship of all newspapers. My father marched for civil rights in 1965 and both parents actively opposed America's defense of an oppressive government during the Vietnam War. From them, I learned the importance of speaking out, and the importance of the right to do so.
Now, we have an administration trying to change what it means to be an American.
