Blake Horton

If your scale shot up after Thanksgiving, the first thing that Blake Horton wants you to do is calm down.

A day or two of overindulging isn't nearly enough time to pack on the pounds that the scale said you did, the 43-year-old fat-loss coach said.

Here's why.

According to Horton, who lost 60 pounds by eating one massive meal a day, the overnight weight isn't body fat. It's water.

"The scale jumping up overnight? That’s due to carbs and sodium," he told his 266K Instagram followers Friday night, Nov. 28.

Eating just 100 grams of carbs can make the body hold onto one pound of water, and most people eat far more than that on a holiday, Horton reminded holiday revelers. The number on the scale, he said, tells you nothing about how many calories you actually consumed.

There are 3,500 calories in a pound of body fat. So even if the scale is up, it's impossible for all of that to be real weight right now.

He warns against overcorrecting after a holiday meal, as cutting too many carbs can backfire: the body depends on them for energy, Horton said. His advice? Return to your normal habits and let your body rebalance naturally.

"As you get back to your regular diet, the water weight will dissipate… you’ll feel like your regular self," he said. "So relax, cut some calories, enjoy your weekend."

Horton, who lost 60 pounds, built his following by sharing his “one meal a day” lifestyle: fasting for 24 hours and then eating a massive single meal. He turned to the approach after traditional calorie-deficit dieting left him constantly hungry.

While he once tracked every macro and weighed every ingredient, Horton now follows a more flexible routine as he focuses on maintaining his weight, not losing more.

Locals may recognize him from Saddle River County Park, where he’s often seen riding one of his many bicycles and popping wheelies, easily spotted by his signature afro and friendly demeanor.

Horton is preparing to roll out the pre-sale for his New Year's coaching program. Follow him on Instagram for updates.
