LEXINGTON, Ky. — Over the past 16 years, a major part of Lexington's Department of Environmental Quality and Public Works' seasonal projects has been held the Friday after Thanksgiving.
It's the annual Gobble Grease Toss, an event that gives people a safe way to dispose of cooking oil instead of just throwing it away or dumping it down the drain.
Katherine Collins, workforce development coordinator, reminded people about the risk as temperatures drop. Collins said all wastewater goes to one of the two water treatment plants in the city. Once hardened oils build up, it can lead to overflows into creeks and even yards.
“You think about it, when you flush the toilet, when you run your sink drain, that water is going to the same place," Collins said. "You pour in grease down your sink drain
