Four people have been taken into custody — and more arrests are expected — following a fatal fire in Maryland that claimed three lives.
At around 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 18, crews in Washington County were called to the 13800 block of National Pike in Clear Spring, where they were met by a home that was "heavily involved in fire," with people trapped inside, according to the Maryland Fire Marshal.
During the primary search of the burning home, crews found three victims inside — Brittany Ray, 31, Harold Fliechman, 36, and Brianna Mae Weishaar, 25, all of Clear Spring.
All three were pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. The cause and manner of death remain under investigation by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore.
Two family dogs were pulled from the home alive and were transferred to the SPCA, officials said.
"During their initial investigation, signs of foul play were discovered to include K-9 alerts for accelerants at the home and trauma to the victims that were inconsistent with fire-related injuries," officials said.
The investigation led to the arrests of Darnell (aka Donnell) Hawkins, 47, of Baltimore; Tony Smith, 43, of Hagerstown; Maurice Mouzon, 46, of Baltimore; and Kierra White, 35, of Glen Burnie.
Investigators say they believe that the three victims lived in the home at the time the fatal fire broke out. It is not believed to be a random act of violence.
Hawkins was arrested in Baltimore County on Nov. 28.
He is charged with three counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree arson, and related offenses. He is currently being held in the Baltimore County Detention Center without bond.
Smith was arrested in Montgomery County on Nov. 23.
He is charged with three counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree arson, and related offenses. He is being held at the Montgomery County Detention Center without bond.
Mouzon was arrested in Baltimore City on Nov. 21.
He is charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, distribution of narcotics, and a handgun violation.
Mouzon is also facing separate charges in relation to possession with intent to distribute narcotics located during his arrest. He is being held at the Baltimore Central Booking and Intake Center without bond.
White was arrested in Baltimore County on Nov. 25.
She is charged with acting as an accessory after the fact to murder. She is being held at the Washington County Detention Center without bond.
The fatal fire remains under investigation.
